Basic 5-Card Stud

Also known as: 5 Card Stud, Five-Card Stud

Classic 5-card stud structure: one hidden card, four exposed cards, and a betting round after each deal stage.

Steps to Play

  1. All players ante an agreed amount into the pot.
  2. Dealer gives each player 1 card face down and 1 card face up.
  3. Run the first betting round (optionally using a bring-in based on lowest upcard).
  4. Deal a third card face up to each active player, then run the second betting round.
  5. Deal a fourth card face up to each active player, then run the third betting round.
  6. Deal a fifth card face up to each active player, run the final betting round, then showdown; best 5-card hand wins.

How to Win

Win the pot by having the highest standard 5-card poker hand at showdown, or by betting and getting all other players to fold.

Tips & House Rules

  • Track exposed cards to estimate opponents' outs and hidden strength.
  • For home-game variety, optionally designate 1-2 wild cards before the deal (for example, all twos or one chosen rank).
  • If using wild cards, agree in advance whether they can represent any rank/suit and how ties are broken.
